So over the Bridge of Lions we went keeping on route A!A down the coast. There were many large resorts. We could not even see the Atlantic for most of it. We found where the Alligator Farm was but didn't stop. Too many school buses parked in front. We then went to the St. Augustine Lighthouse which is located on the north end of the island. The first tower built in 1737 no longer exists. The tower built in 1874 is still standing. and working.
The working light was automated in 1955. The original was oil. The keeper carried this can up the 165 feet to the top. I lifted it. It was very heavy.
There are 219 steps with 8 landings. By the first landing my fear of heights kicked in. Bill made it to the top. I then went into the keepers home where the head keeper lived with the assistant keeper and their families. It is just a few feet from the tower itself and is a Victorian styled place. The place has been restored after a fire in 1970 and is now the museum. The living quarters we small but still luxurious.
The grounds are kept beautifully with shade trees and some flowers.
We returned the scooter coupe and went into the village for lunch. Next stop for me was Potter's Wax Museum. Bill had been to Madame Tussauds so he didn't come in with me. There were many from the history of St. Augustine and others. This is Ben Franklin. I liked him. He liked beer.
Johnny Depp was there as Captain Jack Sparrow..
There was a room to watch whatever was on. I sat to watch part of the history of Al Capone. It was interesting and I could have stayed for an hour or so but Bill would be waiting.
I even got to view some of the clothing that was to be used along with the partial wax figures.
I would recommend this for anyone visiting. Back at the marina we ran into some other liveaboards. Sasha lives on a sailboat on the other dock. It had been a long hot day for her. She was just plain pooped.
And so ends another day in St. Augustine.
Patti and Bill :-)
